Los Angeles County Revs Up DUI Checkpoint Activity

Posted by Vitaly Sigal | Nov 16, 2012 | 0 Comments

Los Angeles County law enforcement has been ramping up its DUI checkpoint activity lately, just in time for the holidays. This year marks the eighth consecutive year that the county has been awarded money to implement more DUI checkpoints. It has been reported that the county has received approximately $450,000 to combat drunk driving through September 2013.

Tonight, DUI checkpoints will be set up at:

  • Little Armenia / East Hollywood DUI Checkpoint – Vermont at Santa Monica Blvd, 8p-2a
  • Los Angeles (Pico-Union) DUI Checkpoint – Vermont at Pico, 8p-2a
  • Santa Clarita – undisclosed location, 6p-2a
  • Lancaster – undisclosed location, 6p-2a

With the new round of funding, we can expect to see more DUI checkpoints across the county. If you pull up to a DUI checkpoint, stay calm and try not to act suspicious. Don't turn around and try to dodge it, chances are there are police officers looking for this type of behavior.

If you are pulled over on suspicion of DUI, it is important to cooperate, but remain quite. Keep in mind that you have the right to remain silent. Many times when a police officer asks if a person has been drinking, he or she will respond, “I just had one glass of wine.” You just gave the officer the green light to conduct further investigation.

By remaining silent (but polite), you won't incriminate yourself. If you are arrested for DUI, your attorney will have a better chance of building you a defense if you didn't admit to drinking and driving.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you have the right to refuse a field sobriety test. If an officer asks you to get out of your car to perform a field sobriety test, you have the right to refuse to do so. Sometimes performing these tests can do more harm than good and can hurt your case by showing that you were driving while impaired.
